Castells, intangible heritage of humanity


After much anticipation happily approved the inclusion of the castles in the list of intangible heritage of humanity.

The Committee (...) decide that [this element] Satisfies the criteria for inscription on the Representative List, as FOLLOWS:

* R1: The population of Catalonia believes that the tradition of human towers is an integral part of their cultural identity. This tradition is passed from generation to generation, giving the community members a sense of continuity, social cohesion and solidarity.

* R2: The inscription on the Representative will promote the intangible cultural heritage as a tool for strengthening social cohesion, while promoting respect for cultural dialogue and human creativity.

* R3: We have described in detail the protective measures currently taken and those planned for the future, and also showed the commitment of the State and communities to implement in order to ensure the viability of this cultural element.

* R4: The application package has been developed through consultation and cooperation with the custodians of this tradition, they have also given their free, prior and informed consent.

* R5: The human towers are listed in the Inventory of Ethnological Heritage of Catalonia managed and maintained by the Department of Culture and Media.
