The Pearl
John Steinbeck
[1947]

Novela corta de Steinbeck, con la tensión y temática habitual en él, pero no por eso previsible o menos sorprendente.

Then from the corner of the house came a sound so soft that it might have been simply a thought, a little furtive movement, a touch of a foot on earth, the almost inaudible purr of controlled breathing. Kino held his breath to listen, and he knew that whatever dark thing was in his house was holding its breath too, to listen.

It is wonderful the way a little town keeps track of itself (...) let one man step out of the regular thought or the known and trusted pattern, and the nerves of the townpeople ring with nervousness and communication travels over the nerve lines of the town. Then every unit communicates to the whole.

But Kino had grown tight and hard. He felt the creeping of fate, the circling of wolves, the hover of voltures. He felt the evil coagulating about him, and he was helpless to protect himself. He heard in his ears the evil music. And on the black velvet the great pearl glistened, so that the dealer could not keep his eyes from it.

Palomar
Italo Calvino
[1983]

descriptive exercise undertaken with Palomar Calvino is interesting, although results are not entirely uniform, as he meditates on various topics.

1) The

bather All this time swim to the west is the strip of light directed at him to shut down little by little beyond the point tending to his arm each with its refleo, which only he has that direction and moves with him. On both sides of the water reflected the blue is darker. Is that the only data not illusory, common to all: the dark, asks Mr. Palomar.

That night the sky looks a lot more crowded than any map, the schematic configurations are in fact more complicadadas and less clear, each cluster could contain a triangle or broken line're looking for, and every time you go back to look up to a constellation, it seems a little different.

The real distance between two generations is given by the elements they have in common and require the cyclical repetition of the same experiences (...); while in contrast the elements really different between us and them are the result of irreversible changes that each season brings, that is, depend on the historical legacy that we will have passed. (...) So we have nothing to teach: as most similar to our experience we can not influence, in leading our mark not recognize them.

Palomar's meditations

La Plaça del Diamant
Rodoreda
[1962]

made the mistake of continuing to read this book until the end, hoping to "start "at some point. Could not understand how to become a classic of Catalan literature. Let's see, the interesting chapters on the war is three or four (of 49). The main character, "Colometa" is downright unbearable, their stories, more fun to suck on a nail, and the story leaves much to be desired.

Last winter was the saddest. They brought the boys of sixteen. (...) There were very large men who learned to make war on the streets. Young and old, everyone in the war, the war sucked and gave them death. Many tears, much damage inside and out.
